The biggest hills of Cairo are rising on the East side of the river Nile. Since the pharaohs’s times this area is well known for its quarries. Beneath those hills there was the biggest prison in the kingdom so the prisoners could cut the stone that pharaohs used to build their tombs and pyramids. Every year the great river Nile flooded the area between Mokattam and Giza plateau and those giant cubes of stone were transported with boats. Today when Nile is not flooding anymore the city of Cairo lies between these two plateaus but some things still didn’t change. The biggest prison is still there and the prisoners are still cutting rocks. Egypt is also full of marble and in Mokattam there is the biggest marble market. All our hotel marble is from there and all our mosaics are hand made work of local marble carvers.
